Oshawa: April 19th: It doesn’t get any better than this. That statement was just one of endless accolade comments echoed through-out of the historic Thornton-Dundee Community Centre (TDCC) complex as the – Oshawa Charity Euchre officially finalized their 2011-2012 business hosting an unbelievable successful closing awards banquet with a horse racing derby

An overflow crowd of 92 players, guests and friends (see photos) jammed this tiny venue. The TDCC is credit as being one of Canada’s oldest operating community centres. The venue has housed countless events for over the past 132 years. Euchre has been played (according the records now for in over a century. With the arrival of the Oshawa Charity Euchre group last September euchre has been rekindled creating a new keen interest in this popular Canadian pastime of enjoyment.

The OCE operated a 30 game schedule in the 2011-2012 season held each Thursday evening while serving their mandate ……….

“Euchre With A Community Purpose’

The volunteer executive collective strongly believe that playing cards is geared to-wards enjoyment first. This creates a “FUN FIRST’ attitude among the players. Winning remains secondary. The ultimate goal is serving the citizens of Oshawa.

Compared to some rival local operated euchre’s their focus seems to be directed towards profit only. Those euchre’s claim they offer higher pay-outs to the winners however no public records are available to our knowledge. We believe the OCE formula is superior. Your executive committee believe information news is must tool, Our organization prime purpose are to help in community and people who are less fortune while maintaining the spirit playing competitive euchre.

The 2011-2012 campaign just completed its 30 game schedule on April 12th. Again we compare our payouts are equally as good and in most cases even better. Here are real facts? First and foremost the OCE has donated $3,900.00 to charity since last September. This includes support for the Oncology Department at Sick Kids Hospital St.Vincent’s Kitchen supper for 225 needy, Christmas Breakfast with Santa including 200 children toys: The Durham College athletic program ‘Adopt a-Lord. A fund raiser dance in aid of St.Vincent’s Kitchen

The buck doesn’t stop now that the euchre seasons officially is over. Our community work never stops as is demands for our help Upcoming sponsored events includes the 2nd Marsh Fund Raiser dance with music supplied by the popular Par Four on May 12th, the TDCC Park Opening BBQ operated by the OCE on May 26th and foll the June lst over night walk in aid of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Executive pay-out bonus to the individuals who are the winners with total points and lone hands are rewarded. that totalled year end at $4,778.90 since last September The always popular 50/50 draw recorded a give-a-ways of $1,236.50 . This is a voluntary purchase program. The recorded amounts and are published for our members weekly. No other euchre does this. Most euchre’s never supply weekly ‘stats’ updates .or financial statements By supporting our worthy opposition system no one really knows who really wins. Only a good players profit while others are left standing outside puzzled. Most important charities suffer In other words they are living in a in a ME WORLD, The OCE books are always open for inspection

OCE Awards

Frances Hirst and Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson are the only two players boasted double category titles. To Hirst’s credit she was flawless going 30 for 30 establishing her perfect attendance record. She gained first place status also in winning the Ladies Lone Hands title recording 54. Meanwhile the ‘Mite’ now in her third season with us has been quoted on numerous occasion saying ‘I enjoy the OCE euchre the best.. it’s so friendly they have great players who are very helpful. In addition she won the Female Most Points with1,962 for the Ladies Best Game by Game Percentage comprising a 67:65%.

Other crowned award holders were Taylor Brooks (Men’s)`best percentage at 69:50%. Kenny Graves took home the (Men’s)Most Points scoring a nifty 1,997 just 3 points behind the 2K plateau .Ron ‘Bateman” Hele is back receiving nighty 8 hour sleeps finally securing the (Men’s)`Lone Hands title with 86 for his third time in six years.

The popular executive awards saw Rick Harrison named (Men’s)` Rookie of the Year with Patti Goodine being being named the female victor. Cathy Kehoe (Ladies) and Matt Dressing (Men’s) took the most improved player category respectively. Sonja Graham was the Female winner with the Male being selected as the Most Underrated being named was Bill Dressing. The Logan’s Gloria and Michael became automatic winners capturing the Female and Male Players of the Year.
RACING A BIG HIT

Probably the biggest highlight occurred with the appearance of the six horses who have been wintering in Prince Edward County getting ready for big race at now famous OCE Race Way. Horses entered were Bell Hop, Licky ‘Lil’, Horney Harry, Lulu, Lucky Pierre and Princess. Wagering was permitted with a minimum wager of 25 cents up to a loonie allowed per race. Mr.’K’ a male nurse at the Thornton View seniors residence nearly missed the Oshawa Charity Euchre (OCE) week 29 session conducted at the Thornton-Dundee Community Centre Seems he over slept. He arrived just moments prior to the 7:00 pm start. In his rush to he failed to bring his wallet and had to borrow his admission entrance from OCE founder Jim Shaw

As it eventually turned out Mr.’K’ returned his borrowed funds from his windfall.

Kurikshuk over-came a ten point deficit entering the final game trailing Marg Miller 82 points compare to his 72. Toiling with partner Don Richardson this odd couple finished with a flurry amazing 18 points. Mr ‘K’ finished with a cool 90 points only 2 points ahead of runner-up Miller.

Other players finishers in the TOP TEN’, in 3rd place holder Connie Tomlinson 82points; in 4th spot was David Pye recording a 79; while a two deadlocked prevailed for 5th place Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson/George Schnaider having 78 ea, it was a three way traffic jam for 7th placing between Don Richardson/ Phil Nicholls/ Taylor Brooks each with 75 points apiece while Trevor Van Peppen rounded out the top ten finisher posting a nifty 73

Normally Mr ‘K’ would have been a double dip victor having posted 8 lone hands. Oshawa Charity Euchre rules compiled six years ago states no player can win cash awards twice on the same evening. As a result Dave‘Apple” Pye was awarded the Connie Coins in the sum of a $18.50 payday. Pye had accumulated 6 LH’s.

Shaw’s Shorts

‘Popular Patti’ Wins 1st Ever 50/50

You couldn’t remove that $56.00 ear to ear smile from Patti Goodine face. She won her first ever 50/50. Draw master Taylor Brooks selected ticket number 452 and it matched perfectly for the excitable Goodine. This very popular players draw has awarded $1,129.50 this 2011-2012 campaign,.

‘Executive Awards’

Another popular event is the executive awards presented weekly to players who haven’t secured many prizes or cash rewards. Week 29 acclaimed winners were ‘LeGros’ Michael Logan who received a demin shirt with a retail value of $25.00, Tony Goodine notched a Durham College green Polo shirt with a retail value of $20.00, giant chocolate Easter Bunnies went to Joyce Finley just back from a month’s vacation on Canada’s east coast and to new comer Trevor Van Peppen, The retail value of each bunny was $5.00.

‘Individual Awards’

Next Thursday (April 12th) completes the 30 game 2011-2012 schedule. It would seem Kenny Graves has a lock on the YTD Men’s accumulate most points crown with 1,942. He should top the 2,000 total at season’s end. Nearest rival is Taylor Brooks who sits 60 points behind has 1.882. The ladies division remains a question mark Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson vs. second place holder Frances Hirst in a 19 point spread difference. You can take your pick here. Meanwhile there is no give in the Men’s percentage race as only a .34% difference exist between Taylor Brooks and Kenny Graves 69:70% vs. 69:36%. Meanwhile Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson has the inside track slot to becoming the Ladies winner. Victory for the YTD most lone hands remains a complete mystery between Ron`Batman Hele and Taylor Brooks. Only 4 separate this twosome. Batman has 84 and the ‘Brooker 80.Who gets hot will be the eventual winner It’s a ditto climax within the ladies section Frances Hirst leads Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson by 2. Hirst boasts with 52 while the ‘Mite’ checks in with 50.Providing she remains healthy Frances Hirst should accomplish a perfect 30 for 30 attendance record. Special Executive Awards for both female and male will also be presented in the following categories on Thurs. April 19th Male Rookie of the Year, Female Rookie of the Year, Male-Most Improve Player, Female Most Improve Player, Male-Most Underrated Player, Female-Most Underrated Player, Male-Top Player, Female Top Player and Perfect Attendance (Current Leader Francis Hirst)

Other Briefs

It seems he’s recovering. After missing a week Don Richardson was back to his normal grouchy temperament . With capable help from Kenny Graves they set up the tables for week 29 play. ‘Diaper Don’ had himself a big night at cards scoring 75 points Richardson continues to visit his doctor for back treatments three times weekly…..The Harrison’s Dorothy and Rick have arrived safe and sound with their dog for the families month long vacation in Myrtle Beach SC. Enjoy yourselves- both of you (and your dog) deserve the time away…….. Did you know??? Tony Goodine played professional baseball within the Boston Red Sox organization back in the 50’s. Speaking of baseball OUR BLUE JAYS beat Cleveland in extra innings to open the American League season in Ohio. Next week the Toronto home opener at the Rogers Centre. To celebrate baseball our co-chefs Lori Chambo and Phil Nicholls have a intermission luncheon planned (Week 30) to salute baseball. The menu includes ‘Ballpark Franks and old fashion favorite Apple Pie topped with Ice Cream for dessert……..Final plans are just about formulated for the gala closing awards banquet and horse racing evening. We are expecting over 70 to attend Those joining us are reminded to break plenty of loose change (especially 25 cent coins) for the wagering, …..A OCE welcome to TDCC boss man Danny Li. His Thursday `Beer`hockey has been completed. Now he wants to play euchre and he`s pretty good. Our partnership with TDCC has been excellent. Five members of his executive board will be attending our ballyhoo finale April 19th including Sue Tranter, Thalia Elliott, Theresa Doyle and Jay Frove.

Oshawa: Mar 29: As players enter into the Oshawa Charity Euchre (OCE) season final month of the 2011-2012 season as predicated in earlier weekly updates numerous photo finishes are forecasted in all statistical categories. According to our ‘Stats man’ Bill Dressing predicts a whirlwind wrap-up to the 30 game schedule. Only two weeks remain . In the April scheduled games to be played on April 5th (week 29) ( and April 12th (week 30)
.
Dressing is quick to point out it’s going to be a photo finish before the curtain closes on another successful campaign at the Thornton-Dundee Community Centre held every Thursday evening.
Lets exam and review each category of who win finally prevail as the OCE eventual winner will be
.
Top Male Total points

Remains a tossup between Kenny Graves who’s lead the race for the bulk season and Taylor Brooks. Graves the current pace setter holds as 63 point advantage and has performed with little difference in his final score from week to week. Saying this he had his first off week during week 28 scoring just 61 points, this score was prompted from 27 blanks out if 80 attempts including an embracing 8 consecutives no points during game three toiling with his partner Bill Dressing. What hurt Brooks chance he missed the first two weeks of the schedule. The victor will receive a OCE trophy.

Top Female Total points

Like the men’s division it’s another shoot out between Shirley ‘Mighty’ Mite’ Robinson and Frances( almost perfect)Hirst The ‘Mite’ holds a upper hand with a narrow 11 point advantage. This a toss of who will become the champion,. The victor will receive a OCE trophy.

Male Percentage

Like the total points division it a two battle between arch rivals Taylor Brooks wand Kenny Graves. The roles are reverse as Taylor is in charge holding a narrow 00:24% lead 69:50% compared to 69:26%. Wow that close. The eventual winner probably won’t be decided until last card is played on April 12th. The victor will receive a OCE trophy.

Female Percentage

Shirley ‘Mighty’ Mite’ Robinson has a lock on this award. Nearest rival is her memes Frances Hirst who trails the ‘Mite’ by 5.15 % points which seems impossible to catch up. The victor will receive a OCE trophy.

Male Accum Lone Hands

For the bulk of season Ron`Batman Hele has been the leader. The former two time champion is headed in the same direction this campaign. He is first place with 81 after 28 weeks and is ahead of the second place holder Taylor Brooks by 5 LH’s (81 to 76) This two way race depends entirely on who gets HOT. Both a capable of breaking this wide open..The victor will receive a OCE trophy.

Female accum Lone Hands

Those two gals are running ‘neck and neck again. Frances Hirst and Shirley ‘Mighty’ Mite’ Robinson the front runners. This time Hirst is the first place holder to 50 compared to the ‘Mites’ 48. Another flip of the coin in declaring the eventual victor. You be the judge. The victor will receive a OCE trophy

Executive awards Female & Male

Your executive have voted and will be awarding special trophies in the following cateroies at the awards banquet on Thurs. April 19th

a) Male Rookie of the Year
b) Female Rookie of the Year
c) Male-Most Improved Player
d) Female Most Improved Player
e) Male-Most Underrated Player
f) Female-Most Underrated Player
g) Male-Top Player
h) Female Top Player
i) Perfect Attendance
(Current Leader Francis Hirst)

Shaw’s Shorts

‘Bushwacker’ Tops Scorer 83 pts

Eric ‘Bushwaker’ Goodwin captured his second $20.00 first place prize money this money winning the most points during week 28 registering 83 impressive points, His previous victory occurred on March 15th . On season the smiling Goodwin has pocketed $64.10 in his abbreviated campaign. Other ’Top Ten’ finishers were Sonja Graham second collecting 82 points,03rd was Joyce Dickens with 81, Cecil `Mister Brown` Wilson and Lori Chambo deadlocked for 4th posting 80 each, Matt Dressing was 6th having 76; followed by the impressive new comer Trevor Van Peppen had himself a 07th finish with an impressive 75;Jan ‘Hun’ Lynch was a 08th with a 71, followed by Frances Hirst and George Schnaider 71 and rounding out the best of-best each with 70

Super meal by Lori & Phil

It’s has been reported from reliable sources many OCE players will be forced to join weight watchers with all those extra pounds absorbed during our intermission lunches. Again Lori Chambo and Phil Nicholls out did themselves with assorted sandwiches a delicious tray of Sheppard’s pie, assorted veggies a huge carrot unbelievable tasty birthday cake for March’s celebrity Cathy Kehoe. Adding more calories to the mix Fay ‘Kitchen Mum” Graves brought a mammoth fresh fruit tray and a home baked coffee cake. Graves ,was upset with 2 players missing out during week 27 (Mar 22nd) as that menu had been completely eaten. This seem very funny as we have five fewer players in attendance with the same amount of food prepared. It was reported that some players appeared 3 times while others got nil. We remind everyone this isn’t your supper it’s intended to be snack only.

‘Daper Don’Recovering

Yeoman worker and superb volunteer Don Richardson was a MIA. Each Thursday he sets up the tables for the hall’s euchre, makes sure enough soda, bottle water, ensures the building has the proper heat, removes the garbage and removes the recycle materials and ensures that any food left over is delivered to the local hostels. That’s a lot of unheralded ballyhoo for Mister ‘R’ and his lame back. Under orders issue from his family doctors rest for his ailing back. Meanwhile pinch hitters Ken ‘Quiet Man’ Graves and Bill Dressing assumed his duties acting as pinch hitters on March 29th. The OCE executive supplied a $25.00 coffee gift certificate to Richardson as a “GET WELL QUICK” effort on behalf of the members.

Harrison’s off to Myrtle Beach

The Harrison’s Dorothy and Rick departed for a month’s vacation in Myrtle Beach SC Friday (Mar 30) at 3 am They originally had plans to depart earlier however Rick insisted insuring he had his weekly euchre fix. Enjoy yourselves- both of you deserve the time away.

Graves after twenty six unsuccessful tries finally won the luxury 50/50 draw cashing in scoring a payday of$42.00. When accepting his windfall the “Quiet Man’ responded stating ‘that should buy me a few burgers’. Graves favourite eat-out location is any Hamburg venue.

Meanwhile Logan finally nailed down first place honours registering 83 points including four lone hands finishing on top with 83 points. His dry spell goes back to opening night (Sept when he ran away posting a mammoth 104 points. It’s been 25 weeks between triumphs for the likeable Logan.

Finally Hele had himself a good night’ sleep after an invigorating 6 lone hands that increased his first place margin lead to six over nearest rival Taylor ‘Kid’ Brooks. A two time LH’s title holder the ‘Batman’ has spent many a sleepless evening worrying about what could have been.

He now has 80 LH’s year-to-date (YTD) for an average of over 3 per game. Numerous team mate would die for that type of percentage. Last time he broke into the LH’s winners circle was back on November 24.

Other impressive showing in the total accumulative points category saw Cecil `Mister Brown` Wilson rebound placing second overall with a comeback 76 points. He was followed by Matt Dressing with 73 points for 3rd place. Other top ten showings went to Ron ‘Batman’ Hele (4th with 71 points), it was a three draw placing between David Stoliker/ Margaret Miller/ Kenny Graves each sharing 6th collecting 70 points each, Taylor Brooks had himself a 68 good for 9th while Gloria Logan/ Jimmy Shaw deadlocked for 10th spot each 66 points.

Two players Marg Miller and Eric ‘Bushwacker’ Goodwin established a 2011-2012 season record as both smashed over the century mark in total points. Miller recorded a season high 109 points while the ‘Bushwacker’ was just six points behind at 103. The only other 100 plus effort went to ‘LeGros’ Michael Logan on opening night (Sept 8th) with 104 points. He was a MIA on week 26.

The largest attendance of the year nine tables worked the 10 games. Since the season opener the OCE has developed into the place to play euchre in Oshawa. Seems the euchre fraternity strongly believe in the OCE’s mandate of “Euchre With A Community Purpose’ .It has really caught on big time hitting the headlines in popularity. As Marg Miller describes the OCE format saying ‘it gives you a feeling of to-getherness’. She continued remarking ever body is so friendly here with no pressure on winning, it great to witness smiling faces and players overall being happy regardless your individual final score. From day one executive member Don Richardson had predicated the OCE would finish with 10 tables of players before the season had ended.

Another first, the largest 50/50 payout occurred with another recent new OCE member Peter Law pocketed $60.00 on winning ticket number 248 picked by draw master Taylor Brooks .

All players in attendance received a St.Patrick beer stein for attending. The stein was topped up with the ‘pause that refreshes’ covered in that famous Irish colour of Sherwood green.

Special prizes were presented from the OCE executive for the best dressed in both the female/male category. In the final decision making process dispite being very difficult saw George Schainder (Male) and Marg Miller (Ladies) accept a $10.00 meal voucher for Johnny’s Favorite Eatery located in the Marland Plaza from owner Naz Somani. Overall all the costumes were outstanding in every detail and you’all are winners.

To top off the very successful night , Lori Chambo and her partner Phil Nicholls prepared a delicious intermission meal. Egg Salad and Salmon sandwiches, home-made ‘hot’ chilli with garlic bread and six different deserts including a chocolate cake plus your the usual assortment of unlimited beverage consisting of Folgers Coffee, Red Rose assorted teas, soda diet and regular and bottled water.

Shaw’s Shorts ……

The year-end lone battle for the hand title is very much up for grabs between Ron ‘Batman’ Hele the ‘Kid’ Taylor Brooks. Both took a back seat during week 26 however to Marg Miller who posted a mammoth 11 LH’s. Brooks scored four giving him season total of 63 while the former two time champion Hele produced a trio for a YTD total of 67 now just four ahead. With four week remaining you can flip a coin of who the winner will be.

TOP TEN FINISHERS WEEK 26

With Marg Miller (finishing lst with a 25 point improvement) and Eric ‘Bushwacker’ Goodwin (second overall posting 34 point improvement). Both boasted 100 plus scores of 109 and 103 respectively) it seemed a lot of new faces hit the ‘top ten in total points’ ie- Matt Dressing improved by 26 points over week 25 with 85 points (finishing 5th) Billy ‘The Kid’ Graham placed 6th with 83 points, Dorothy Harrison improved her score by 22 finishing up in 6th place with at 82, Joyce Dickens continues to impress with a 81 points (finishing 7th) Lori Chambo was 8th overall with 80 points, Jimmy Shaw returned from a snappy almost recovery from a one broken rib and a pair crack ribs placed 9th with 78 points while John Burr completed the ‘Top Ten Selects’ with impressive 74. Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson was the only top ten returnee with a 3rd place 86: Having an off week was Rick Harrison down 32, Cecil `Mister Brown` Wilson slipped by 29; Frances Hirst feel 22; Don Richardson was 19 and Kylie Hewson dropped 18.

Thursday at week 25 this 20 year old dominated his peers AGAIN as the Oshawa Charity Euchre assembled for another successful night of cards at the Thornton-Dundee Community Centre.

Brooks continues with impressive numbers winning back to back individual points honours registering 90. That’s 3 more than his first place showing of 87 the week previous. On the year he’s registered five first place finishes, the others happened on October 13th and twice in January on the 5th and 26th. Thanks to his brilliant lone hands showing of seven. He was shutout however in the Connie’s Coins Jack-Pot . This acknowledgement produced a double winner of Frances Hirst and new face Marg Miller making her annual one time appearance. This dual shared $12.50 ($6.25 each) as O.C.E. rules state no one player can win ‘Cash-Money’ twice. Instead he pocketed $20.00 from the O.C.E. Cash Box. On the season Brooks holds first place overall in winnings this 2011-2012 campaign capturing $243.00 that relates to a weekly average take home pay cheque of $9.70. Besides those laurels Brooks has taken dead aim at the individual total lone hands crown. His seven was five more than Ronald ‘Batman’ Hele who secured only two. Now with just five games remaining in the 30 game schedule Brooks has narrow the difference to five. Hele holds top dog status with a YTD total of 64 compared to the “Kid” with 59. Kenny Graves is a distance third with 46.

Other ‘Top-Five’ finishers behind Brooks were Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson (2nd 87points), Cecil `Mister Brown` Wilson (3rd 86 points), Marg Miller (04th 84 points) and veteran Don Richardson (5th 81 points).

MIA’S REPL

Lots of new faces appeared at week 25. A special welcome is accorded to Marg Miller, Joyce Dickens, Frank Gerrits and Vivian Parker. We seek your attendance at future games. Sure you have growing pains attempting to establish yourself in to-day’s competitive marketplace but overall things always seem to find away of evening out. Take a look at our own Oshawa Charity Euchre poster boy Taylor ‘Little-Brooker’ Brooks. A couple weeks back he departed his teenage years breaking into those 20’s for the first time. That’s a growing experience in itself. A engineering graduate from Durham College he’s hitting the pavement seeking full time work while each Thursday he relaxes at the Thornton-Dundee Community Centre at enjoying being touted as the main-man among the 30 plus players who assembly on a weekly bases for a evening of social enjoyment playing progressive euchre. Like anything ‘Brooker’ attempts in life he’s a winner.

Looking at the final results from week 24 action – for the fourth time this 2011-2012 campaign he’s captured the coveted first place showing registering a front running 87 points including four lone hands. His previous triumph’s occurred October 13th and twice in January on the 5th and 26th. Besides the $20.00 O.C.E. cash awarded he was presented with a Oshawa General OHL game day tickets against arch rival Peterborough ‘Petes’ to be played later this month at the swanky GM Centre in downtown Oshawa. He would have an addition bonus from the Connie’s Coins jack-pot for the night’s most lone hands. He tied with veteran Donald Richardson each with four. OCE long established rules state no one player can win ‘Cash-Money’ twice on the same. Richardson pocketed $15.00 which seemed justified as he placed runner-up 7 points back of Brooks in the individual total points with 80.

Others entering the ‘Top-Ten’ standing were Gloria Logan (3rd -78 pts); Shirley ‘Mighty Mite’ Robinson (4th 76 pts); Bill Graham (5th -75 pts); Kenny Graves (6th-74pts); John Burr (7th 72 pts); Tony Goodine (8th 71 pts); Phil Nicholls (9th 69 pts) and Connie Tomlinson (10th 67 pts).
